Pärilikkuslikku, often translated as heritability, is a statistical concept used in genetics and behavioral science to estimate the proportion of variation in a trait within a population that is attributable to genetic factors. It does not refer to the extent to which a trait is inherited by an individual, but rather to the degree of genetic influence on the differences observed among individuals in a specific group and environment.

Heritability is typically expressed as a value between 0 and 1, or as a percentage. A heritability estimate of 0.5, for example, would suggest that 50% of the variation in a particular trait among individuals in a population is due to genetic differences, while the remaining 50% is due to environmental influences and random chance.

It is crucial to understand that heritability is population-specific and environment-specific. A trait that has high heritability in one population or environment may have low heritability in another. For instance, height has a high heritability in well-nourished populations, but in populations where nutrition is poor, environmental factors might play a larger role in determining height differences, thus lowering the heritability estimate.

Furthermore, heritability does not imply immutability. Even a highly heritable trait can be influenced by environmental interventions. For example, intelligence has a significant genetic component, but educational programs and stimulating environments can still lead to observable increases in cognitive abilities within a population. Heritability is a measure of existing variation, not a determinant of destiny.
