Päikesepliitide, also known as solar flares, are sudden, intense bursts of radiation released from the Sun's atmosphere. These events occur when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar corona is suddenly released. Solar flares can produce emissions of light across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays, and can release a significant amount of energy.

The most powerful solar flares, known as X-class flares, can release as much energy as 10 billion megatons of TNT. These flares can cause disruptions in satellite operations, radio communications, and power grids on Earth. They can also release high-energy particles, known as solar protons, which can pose a radiation hazard to astronauts and high-flying aircraft.

Solar flares are often accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are large clouds of plasma and magnetic field that are ejected from the Sun's corona. CMEs can interact with Earth's magnetosphere, causing geomagnetic storms that can induce power outages, damage satellites, and disrupt GPS signals.

Solar flares are classified by their peak flux in X-rays, with classes ranging from A to X. Class A flares are the weakest, while Class X flares are the strongest. The frequency of solar flares varies with the solar cycle, with more flares occurring during solar maximum than during solar minimum.

Scientists study solar flares using a variety of ground-based and space-based instruments, including telescopes, spectrographs, and spacecraft. Understanding solar flares is important for predicting space weather and mitigating the impacts of solar activity on Earth and in space.
