Päikesekahjustusi refer to the damage to the skin caused by excessive exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This damage can manifest in several ways, both short-term and long-term. The most immediate effect is sunburn, characterized by redness, pain, and sometimes blistering of the skin. Sunburn occurs when the skin's cells are damaged by UV-B rays.

Over time, cumulative sun exposure can lead to premature aging of the skin, often referred to as photoaging. This includes the development of wrinkles, fine lines, a leathery texture, and changes in skin pigmentation such as sunspots or age spots. UV-A rays are primarily responsible for these deeper skin changes.

A more serious consequence of prolonged sun exposure is an increased risk of skin cancer. UV radiation can damage the DNA in skin cells, leading to mutations that can cause uncontrolled cell growth. The most common types of skin cancer linked to sun exposure are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Preventing päikesekahjustusi involves taking precautions to limit exposure to harmful UV rays. This includes wearing sunscreen with a high SPF, protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses. Seeking shade during peak sun hours and avoiding tanning beds are also crucial preventive measures. Protecting the skin from the sun is essential for maintaining skin health and reducing the risk of serious medical conditions.
