Párbajozók

Párbajozók is a Hungarian term that translates to "duelists" or "fencers." It refers to individuals who participate in duels, a formally arranged combat between two people, typically with deadly weapons, fought to settle a point of honor. Historically, duels were common in many European cultures, including Hungary, as a way to resolve disputes when legal or social mechanisms were deemed insufficient. The weapons used in párbaj, or duels, varied over time and place but commonly included swords, sabers, and later, pistols.

The practice of párbaj involved strict codes of conduct and etiquette. These codes, often referred to as dueling codes, dictated everything from the choice of weapons and the distance between combatants to the conditions under which a duel could be initiated and concluded. A second, or witness, was usually appointed by each párbajozó to ensure the rules were followed and to attend to any potential injuries. The resolution of a párbaj could range from one participant conceding to a fatal outcome. While dueling was outlawed in most countries by the 19th century, the concept of the párbajozó remains a significant element in historical and cultural narratives, often associated with concepts of honor, courage, and chivalry, though also with violence and the pursuit of vengeance.
