Pyörremyrskyt

Pyörremyrskyt is a Finnish term that translates to "whirlwinds" or "dust devils" in English. These are small, rotating columns of air that are visible when debris, dust, or other light materials are lifted from the ground. Pyörremyrskyt are typically formed on hot, dry, and clear days when the ground surface is heated unevenly. This uneven heating creates pockets of rising warm air, which can then start to rotate as they ascend.

The formation of a pyörremyrsky often begins with a localized updraft of warm air. As this air rises, it can begin to spin due to small variations in wind direction or temperature gradients. If the rotation becomes strong enough and the updraft is sustained, a visible vortex can form. The size of pyörremyrskyt can vary considerably, ranging from a few feet to over a hundred feet in height, and their width is usually less than ten feet.

While generally harmless, larger pyörremyrskyt can lift and move small objects, posing a minor nuisance. They are a common phenomenon in many parts of the world, particularly in arid or semi-arid regions with open terrain. In Finland, they are observed less frequently than in hotter climates but can still occur during particularly warm and sunny periods. Their transient nature means they form and dissipate relatively quickly, often lasting only a few minutes.
