Pyöristyssääntöjä refer to the rules and conventions used to approximate a number to a certain degree of precision. The most common method is rounding to the nearest integer, tenth, hundredth, or other place value.

When rounding, one looks at the digit immediately to the right of the desired place value. If this digit is 5 or greater, the digit in the desired place value is increased by one. If the digit is less than 5, the digit in the desired place value remains unchanged. All digits to the right of the rounded place value are then replaced with zeros. For example, rounding 3.14159 to two decimal places involves looking at the third decimal place, which is 1. Since 1 is less than 5, the second decimal place (4) remains unchanged, resulting in 3.14. Rounding 3.14759 to two decimal places would result in 3.15 because the third decimal place is 7, which is 5 or greater.

Another method is truncation, where all digits beyond the desired place value are simply discarded without any adjustment to the preceding digit. For instance, truncating 3.14159 to two decimal places would result in 3.14.

In scientific contexts, rounding can be influenced by the concept of significant figures, which represent the digits in a number that are known with certainty. The rules for rounding to a specific number of significant figures are similar to rounding to a specific place value, but applied to the most significant digit rather than the least significant.

The choice of rounding method can depend on the context and desired accuracy. For everyday calculations, rounding to the nearest is most common. In situations requiring strict adherence to measurement precision, significant figures are crucial.
