Pyöristysmalleja

Pyöristysmalleja, or rounding models, are methods used to approximate a numerical value to a certain level of precision. The most common type is rounding to a specified number of decimal places or significant figures. For instance, rounding 3.14159 to two decimal places results in 3.14. Rounding to the nearest integer is also a frequent application.

Different rounding models exist, each with specific rules. Round half up (or commercial rounding) is the most widely taught method, where if the first digit to be discarded is 5 or greater, the last retained digit is increased by one. Round half to even (or banker's rounding) is another method, where if the digit to be discarded is 5, the last retained digit is rounded to the nearest even number. This method is often preferred in scientific and financial contexts as it tends to reduce cumulative bias over many rounding operations.

Other rounding strategies include always rounding up (ceiling function) or always rounding down (floor function), regardless of the discarded digit. These are particularly useful in situations where a minimum or maximum value is required, such as in resource allocation or capacity planning. The choice of rounding model can impact the accuracy and perceived fairness of calculations, especially when dealing with large datasets or sensitive financial figures.
