Traps, or pyydykset in a more specific sense, often refer to devices like fish traps (ryssänpyydys) designed to catch fish passively. Angling, or onkiminen and pilkkiminen, uses lines with hooks and bait. Ice fishing, or pilkkiminen, is a popular winter activity. Spear fishing, or ongaspyynti, involves using a spear to catch fish, typically in shallow waters.

The use of pyydyksiä is regulated by Finnish fishing laws, which are overseen by the Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) and local authorities.
