Pythias

Pythias is a legendary figure from the ancient tale of Damon and Pythias, a classic story of friendship told in Syracuse during the era of the tyrant Dionysius I. The story centers on loyalty and mutual trust between two friends.

In the legend, Pythias is accused of treason by the tyrant. He requests time to settle his affairs and return for his defense. His friend Damon offers to stand as his guarantor and to suffer his punishment if Pythias does not return. The tyrant grants the arrangement.

While Pythias travels to resolve his matters, Damon remains as a pledge. When the appointed time expires, Damon is executed. Pythias then returns in time to face the charges, and moved by the display of fidelity, the tyrant pardons him and extols the two men as an example to his subjects.
