Pysähtymisnopeudet, known in English as stopping distances, refer to the total distance a vehicle travels from the moment a driver perceives a hazard until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. This distance is comprised of two main components: reaction distance and braking distance.

Reaction distance is the distance covered by the vehicle during the driver's reaction time. This is the time it takes for the driver to perceive a situation, decide to brake, and physically move their foot to the brake pedal. Factors such as driver fatigue, distraction, and impairment can significantly increase reaction time and thus reaction distance.

Braking distance is the distance the vehicle travels from the moment the brakes are applied until it stops. This is influenced by several factors, including the vehicle's speed, the condition of the brakes and tires, and the road surface. Higher speeds result in disproportionately longer braking distances due to kinetic energy increasing with the square of velocity. Wet or icy road surfaces also increase braking distance considerably compared to dry conditions.
