Pyrithionic refers to compounds containing the pyrithione functional group, which is a derivative of pyridine with a thiol group attached to the carbon atom adjacent to the nitrogen. The most common and widely recognized pyrithione compound is zinc pyrithione.

Pyrithione derivatives are primarily known for their potent antifungal and antibacterial properties. This biocidal activity makes them effective in a variety of applications. Zinc pyrithione, in particular, is a key ingredient in many anti-dandruff shampoos, where it helps control the Malassezia globosa fungus, a common cause of dandruff. It is also used in antifungal creams and treatments for skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis.

Beyond personal care, pyrithione compounds find use in industrial settings. They are incorporated into paints and coatings to prevent the growth of mold, mildew, and algae, particularly in marine environments or areas prone to moisture. This antifouling property helps maintain the integrity and appearance of surfaces.

The mechanism of action for pyrithiones involves disrupting cellular processes. In fungi and bacteria, they are believed to interfere with membrane transport and inhibit fungal growth by affecting iron metabolism. While generally considered safe for topical use at prescribed concentrations, higher exposures can lead to skin irritation or other adverse effects. Regulatory bodies in different regions set limits on their use in various products.
