Pylväsradiaattorit, also known as column radiators, are a type of central heating radiator characterized by their vertical design, consisting of multiple vertical columns arranged in parallel. These columns are typically made of cast iron or steel and are joined together to form a single heating unit. The design allows for a large surface area, which facilitates efficient heat emission into a room.

Historically, cast iron was the primary material used for column radiators, offering excellent durability and heat retention. Modern iterations are often constructed from steel, which can be thinner and lighter, allowing for more contemporary aesthetics and easier installation. The appearance of column radiators can vary, from the traditional, often ornate, cast iron models to sleeker, more minimalist steel versions. They can be painted in a wide range of colors to match interior décor.

The heating principle of a column radiator is convection and radiation. As water, heated by a boiler, circulates through the columns, the metal heats up and transfers thermal energy to the surrounding air through convection. The surface of the radiator also emits infrared radiation, warming objects and people directly in its path. Their substantial size and heat output make them suitable for heating larger rooms or areas with high ceilings. Installation typically involves connecting them to a central heating system via pipework, with valves allowing for individual control of heat output.
