Pyörrevirtakiillotuslaite, also known as an eddy current retarder, is a type of non-contact brake used in heavy vehicles. It operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When the device is activated, an electric current is passed through coils, generating a magnetic field. This magnetic field interacts with a rotating metal disc, typically made of aluminum, which is attached to the vehicle's driveshaft. The changing magnetic field induces eddy currents within the disc. These eddy currents, in turn, create their own magnetic fields that oppose the original magnetic field, resulting in a braking force. This electromagnetic resistance slows down the rotation of the disc and, consequently, the vehicle's drivetrain.

The primary advantage of pyörrevirtakiillotuslaite is its durability and low maintenance, as there are no physical contact points to wear out, unlike conventional friction brakes. They are particularly effective for controlling vehicle speed on long descents, reducing wear on the primary braking system and preventing brake fade. These devices are commonly found on trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty vehicles where sustained braking power is essential.
