Puuhiilitehdas

Puuhiilitehdas, meaning charcoal factory in Finnish, refers to a facility or process dedicated to the production of charcoal. Charcoal is a lightweight, black, porous solid produced by heating wood or other organic materials in a low-oxygen environment. This process, known as pyrolysis or carbonization, removes water and volatile components, leaving behind a carbon-rich residue.

Historically, puuhiilitehtaat were crucial for industries relying on charcoal as a fuel source, such as metallurgy, glassmaking, and pottery. In Finland, the production of charcoal was closely linked to forestry and ironworks. The charcoal was often produced in kilns, which could be simple earth clamps or more complex brick structures.
