Etymology and meaning: The word is formed from Punkti- or Punktion (puncture) and Tag (day). The root puncture comes from the Latin punctio, referring to the act of puncturing or piercing.

Usage and scope: In routine practice, a Puntionstag may appear on scheduling boards or in internal communications to indicate the day allocated for procedures requiring needle access. This can include venipuncture for blood draws, lumbar puncture (Lumbalpunktion), thoracentesis or paracentesis punctures, and needle biopsies. Because it is not a formally standardized term, its use varies by institution and may be replaced by more specific descriptions such as “blood-drawing day” or “biopsy day” in patient information materials.
