Punasolut

Punasolut is a synthetic solvent developed for sustainable chemistry. Introduced in 2012 by the Puna Institute of Technology and collaborators, it is marketed as a high-boiling, low-volatility solvent intended to replace many chlorinated and petroleum-derived solvents in laboratory and industrial processes. Punasolut is described as a hydrophobic liquid with a boiling point around 190–210 C and a low vapor pressure at ambient conditions, factors that reduce solvent losses during handling and processing. Manufacturers claim that Punasolut offers favorable biodegradability and reduced aquatic toxicity relative to conventional solvents, though environmental performance depends on formulation and use conditions.

The solvent is supplied as a colorless liquid and, in some formulations, as micro-encapsulated or supported liquid to ease recovery and recycling. It is produced from bio-based precursors via esterification and purification steps and is compatible with standard regulatory labeling and safety requirements. Availability varies by region and industry, with academic and contract manufacturers among its primary users.

Applications include natural product and essential oil extraction, pharmaceutical synthesis, polymerization solvents, and general-purpose reaction media in research laboratories. Its high boiling point makes it suitable for reactions at elevated temperatures and for processes requiring efficient solvent recovery.

Safety and regulation: Punasolut is considered moderately flammable and should be handled under standard solvent safety guidelines. It is generally regarded as having low acute toxicity in short-term exposure studies, though long-term and aquatic toxicity data vary by formulation. Proper waste management and solvent recycling are emphasized in regulatory and industry guidelines.
