Pumpzyklus

The Pumpzyklus (pump cycle) is the cyclic sequence by which a pump moves fluid. In engineering literature it refers to the repeating suction and discharge actions that define one operational cycle. The term is common in German-language texts, but the concept applies to a range of pumping devices, from reciprocating pumps to pulsatile rotary systems.

In reciprocating positive-displacement pumps such as piston, plunger or diaphragm types, one cycle comprises suction as the chamber fills, valve timing that closes the inlet, compression or discharge as the fluid is pushed into the discharge line, and reset for the next stroke. Rotary pumps may operate continuously, but cycles appear in start-stop control or when pulsation is present.

Performance during a pump cycle is described by metrics such as flow rate (Q), pressure head (H), efficiency (η), and cycle speed (rpm or frequency). Duty cycle, pulsation amplitude, and presence of dampeners affect smoothness. Cavitation risk increases if suction head is insufficient or speeds are high with viscous fluids.

Applications cover water supply, irrigation, chemical processing, cooling systems, and industrial machinery. In design, engineers optimize valve timing, seal integrity, and hydraulic losses, while considering priming requirements and potential noise and vibration from the cycle.

Maintenance focuses on seals and valves, lubrication of moving parts, and inspection for wear or cavitation damage. Modern installations may use sensors and variable-frequency drives to modulate the pump cycle for efficiency, system stability, and adaptive control.
