Puhallussoitin

Puhallussoitin is a broad category of musical instruments that produce sound through the vibration of air. This vibration is typically initiated by the player's breath or by a mechanical device that blows air into or across the instrument. The resulting sound is then modified by the instrument's construction, including its length, shape, and the presence of holes or valves that alter the vibrating air column.

There are two main classifications within the puhallussoitin family: woodwinds and brass instruments. Woodwind instruments, despite their name, are not always made of wood. Their sound production mechanism often involves a reed, which can be single (like in a clarinet or saxophone) or double (like in an oboe or bassoon), or an edge tone produced by blowing air across an opening, as in a flute. The pitch is changed by opening and closing holes along the instrument's body or by using keys that cover these holes.

Brass instruments produce sound when the player buzzes their lips into a mouthpiece. This vibration is amplified and projected by a metal bell. The pitch is primarily controlled by the player's embouchure (the way they shape their lips) and by using valves or a slide to change the length of the tubing. Common examples of brass instruments include the trumpet, trombone, French horn, and tuba. Both woodwind and brass instruments are fundamental components of orchestras, bands, and various other musical ensembles.
