A pub quiz, or quiz night, is a social trivia event held in pubs, bars, or similar venues where teams compete to answer questions presented by a quizmaster. The goal is to accumulate the highest score across several rounds, with teams typically collaborating to recall knowledge from various subjects.

A typical format involves multiple rounds, such as general knowledge, a picture round, music or audio rounds, and sometimes a tie-breaker. Teams usually consist of 4–6 players, though sizes vary. Answers are submitted on answer sheets or via digital devices, and scoring is commonly 1 point per correct answer. Some questions carry bonus points or offer partial credit. Rounds may be timed, and some nights include a final “mystery” round or a speed round to vary pacing.

The quizmaster reads questions, manages timing, and records scores; a scorekeeper tracks points and announces answers after each round. The social element is central, with audiences encouraged to discuss clues and cheer for teams. Venue rules on collaboration and cheating vary. Prizes range from cash to drinks or vouchers, and hosting duties are often rotated or contracted to pub staff.

Pub quizzes are a staple in many countries and have spawned organized leagues and televised adaptations in some regions. They are used as social gatherings, fundraisers, or corporate events, and many venues run weekly or biweekly sessions. In recent years, online or hybrid formats have emerged, enabling remote teams to participate alongside in-person players.
