Pterothrissus

Pterothrissus is a genus of ray-finned fish belonging to the family Albulidae. This family also includes bonefishes, which are well-known for their sport-fishing value. Pterothrissus is distinguished from other bonefishes by several morphological characteristics, including the structure of its fins and the presence of certain bony elements. The genus currently contains only one recognized living species, Pterothrissus gissu.

Pterothrissus gissu is found in the western Pacific Ocean, primarily in the Indo-West Pacific region. Its habitat includes sandy and muddy bottoms of coastal waters and estuaries. The species is typically found at depths ranging from shallow waters down to approximately 100 meters. Its diet is thought to consist mainly of small invertebrates such as crustaceans and mollusks, which it likely forages for by sifting through the substrate.

The appearance of Pterothrissus gissu is somewhat eel-like, with a long, slender body and a deeply forked tail fin. The dorsal and anal fins are also elongated and run along a significant portion of the body. Its coloration is generally silvery or brownish, providing camouflage against the seafloor. Little is known about its reproductive behavior or life cycle, as it is not a commonly encountered or extensively studied species. Pterothrissus gissu is not considered commercially important, and its conservation status is not well-defined due to limited data.
