Pterodon

Fossils of *Pterodon* have been found primarily in Europe, particularly in the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous rock formations, such as those of Solnhofen, Germany, where some of the most famous pterosaur fossils have been discovered.

*Pterodon* is notable for its well-preserved specimens, including some with detailed impressions of skin, feathers, and even internal organs. The genus is characterized by its elongated wings, which were supported by a single elongated fourth finger, and a long, slender snout. Estimates suggest that *Pterodon* had a wingspan ranging from about 2 to 3 meters (6.5 to 10 feet), making it a medium-sized pterosaur. Its body structure suggests it was adapted for gliding and possibly active flight, with a diet likely consisting of fish, insects, or small vertebrates.

The name *Pterodon* translates from Greek as "winged tooth," referring to its prominent teeth, which were likely used for grasping slippery prey. Unlike some other pterosaurs, *Pterodon* did not possess a crest on its head, though its skull was elongated and streamlined. The genus is closely related to *Rhamphorhynchus*, another well-known pterosaur from the same region and time period, and some fossil specimens have been difficult to distinguish between the two.
