Psykiatrisen is the medical field dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. It integrates biological, psychological, and social approaches to understanding and improving mental health and collaborates with other health and social services to provide comprehensive care.

Historically, psychiatry emerged from early medical and charitable care for the mentally ill and evolved through reforms in the 18th and 19th centuries, the advent of psychopharmacology in the mid-20th century, and a shift toward community-based care and evidence-based practice. Training typically requires a medical degree followed by a residency in psychiatry, with board certification and ongoing continuing education.

Psykiatrisen operates in hospital psychiatry, community health centers, private clinics, and crisis services, and may include forensic and child and adolescent subspecialties. Treatments emphasize evidence-based approaches: various forms of psychotherapy (for example cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and psychodynamic), pharmacotherapy with antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and anxiolytics, and somatic therapies such as electroconvulsive therapy or newer neuromodulation techniques. A key aim is integrated care, addressing physical health, social determinants, and support systems to reduce relapse and hospitalization.

Ethical considerations include patient autonomy, informed consent, confidentiality, and balancing safety with rights in cases of involuntary treatment where applicable. Current challenges include improving access and equity, reducing stigma, integrating mental health with primary care, and advancing research in neuroscience, genetics, and personalized medicine.
