The effective range of proximity-dependent interactions is typically on the order of nanometers to tens of nanometers, though context can vary with diffusion and molecular crowding.

In experimental biology, the term appears in proximity-dependent labeling methods, such as proximity-dependent biotinylation, where an engineered enzyme covalently attaches biotin to proteins within a defined radius, enabling identification by mass spectrometry. Similar strategies include proximity ligation assays, which detect proteins that are in close proximity by amplifying a DNA signal when two antibodies are near each other, and engineered peroxidases for proximity labeling (for example, APEX).
