Protokolloverlay refers to a technique in computer networking where a new communication protocol is encapsulated within an existing one. This allows for the transmission of data that might not be directly supported by the underlying network infrastructure. Essentially, it's like putting a new type of package inside a standard shipping container. The outer protocol handles the physical delivery, while the inner protocol defines the specific way the data is structured and interpreted.

Common examples include tunneling, where an entire network packet from one protocol is treated as data by another protocol. VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) often utilize protocol overlays to create secure, encrypted connections over public networks. Another instance is when protocols are stacked, with each layer adding its own header and payload, effectively overlaying functionality. This approach provides flexibility, enabling the use of newer or specialized protocols without requiring a complete overhaul of the existing network hardware or lower-level protocols. It's a fundamental concept in network design, allowing for evolution and adaptation in a diverse technological landscape.
