ProtoTherran

ProtoTherran is a hypothetical early developmental stage of a terrestrial planet, characterized by a molten or semi-molten surface, intense volcanic activity, and a primitive atmosphere. During this phase, a planet is still coalescing and differentiating, with heavier elements sinking towards the core and lighter ones forming the mantle and crust. The surface is likely a chaotic landscape shaped by continuous bombardment from asteroids and planetesimals, alongside significant outgassing from volcanic processes.

The atmosphere of a ProtoTherran world would be vastly different from that of a mature planet. It would likely be rich in gases released through volcanism, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen, with little to no free oxygen. The lack of a substantial magnetic field, often characteristic of younger planets, would leave the atmosphere vulnerable to erosion by stellar winds. Surface temperatures would be extremely high, precluding the existence of liquid water on the surface in the way we understand it.

This stage is a crucial precursor to the development of a habitable planet. Over eons, cooling of the planetary surface would allow for the formation of a solid crust. Condensation of atmospheric water vapor could lead to the formation of oceans, and the eventual development of a magnetic field could shield the atmosphere.
