Proteinideks

Proteinideks are a proposed class of protein-like macromolecules defined by modular, repeatable units called ideks that encode discrete structural or functional motifs. Each idek is designed to contribute a specific element, such as a binding surface, a catalytic site, or a structural helix. The concept envisions programmable assembly from a library of standardized units.

Ideks are assembled in tandem to form a larger polypeptide that can fold into designed architectures. This modular approach enables rapid prototyping of binding specificities, catalytic functions, or mechanical properties, and supports creating materials with tailored features. Ideks may incorporate canonical amino acids, noncanonical residues, or peptidomimetics to expand functionality and stability.

Production and analysis of proteinideks can involve chemical synthesis for shorter constructs or recombinant methods for longer sequences.
