Protegusale

Protegusale is a term used in biochemical and science-fiction-adjacent literature to denote a hypothetical small molecule proposed as a modulator of cellular proteostasis. Proteostasis describes the network of cellular processes that control protein folding, trafficking, and turnover. In proposed models, protegusale acts as a chemical chaperone, binding transiently to exposed hydrophobic regions in partially unfolded proteins and reducing aggregation. By doing so, it is theorized to support the proper function of chaperone systems, such as HSP70, and influence the rate of ubiquitin-proteasome–mediated degradation. The compound is often described as a lipophilic heterocycle with polar substituents that enable cell permeability; estimates place its molecular weight in the 250–350 dalton range, with moderate aqueous solubility.

Discovery and status: Protegusale was introduced in speculative literature in the late 2010s as a thought-experiment biosynthetic target. There is no established synthetic protocol or peer-reviewed demonstration of its existence in biological systems in real-world experiments. Consequently, protegusale remains a hypothetical construct rather than an approved or commercially available reagent.
