Protectrons

Protectrons are a type of utility robot found in the Fallout video game series. They are designed for public service and security roles, often appearing as sentinels, tour guides, or general-purpose assistants. Visually, Protectrons are characterized by their distinctive, rounded chassis, often with a single optic sensor on top, and two manipulator arms. Their design is somewhat retro-futuristic, suggesting an optimistic vision of automation from a bygone era.

In the game world, Protectrons were manufactured by RobCo Industries. While their programming is intended for helpful tasks, many Protectrons encountered by players have become damaged, their directives corrupted, or they have fallen under the control of hostile factions. This can lead to them attacking indiscriminately or repeating nonsensical phrases. Some Protectrons retain their original functions, offering information or assistance to wasteland dwellers, though their reliability is often questionable. Their relatively simple construction makes them common sights, even in ruined settlements, and they are sometimes scavenged for parts. Despite their potential for malfunction, Protectrons represent a common form of automated labor and security that once permeated the pre-war world.
