Prosthecomicrobium
Prosthecomicrobium is a genus of bacteria within the family Hyphomonadaceae, order Caulobacterales, class Alphaproteobacteria. Members are characterized by prosthecae— stalk-like extensions of the cell envelope—that project from the cell body and increase surface area for nutrient uptake. The genus name combines prostheca with microbium, reflecting this distinctive morphology. Like other prosthecate bacteria, Prosthecomicrobium cells are typically Gram-negative.
Morphology and reproduction: Cells are usually small and rod-shaped, bearing one or more prosthecae. Reproduction occurs
Habitat and ecology: Prosthecomicrobium species have been isolated from aquatic environments, including marine and freshwater systems,
Taxonomy and phylogeny: Prosthecomicrobium is placed in the Hyphomonadaceae within the Caulobacterales. 16S rRNA gene analyses
