Prosessoriäähdyttimen, known in English as a CPU cooler, is a crucial component in a computer system designed to dissipate heat generated by the central processing unit (CPU). CPUs perform complex calculations and operations, which inevitably produce a significant amount of thermal energy. If this heat is not effectively removed, the CPU can overheat, leading to performance degradation, instability, and potentially permanent damage.

There are two primary types of CPU coolers: air coolers and liquid coolers. Air coolers utilize a heatsink, typically made of copper or aluminum, with fins to increase surface area. A fan is mounted on the heatsink to force air across the fins, carrying heat away from the CPU. The heatsink is connected to the CPU via thermal paste, which fills microscopic gaps between the two surfaces to ensure efficient heat transfer.

Liquid coolers, also known as all-in-one (AIO) liquid coolers or custom liquid cooling loops, use a liquid coolant to transfer heat. A water block is mounted on the CPU, circulating coolant through it. The heated coolant then travels through tubing to a radiator, where fans dissipate the heat into the surrounding air. This method is often more efficient at cooling than air coolers, especially for high-performance CPUs, but can be more complex and expensive.

The effectiveness of a CPU cooler is measured by its thermal design power (TDP) rating, indicating the maximum amount of heat it can dissipate. Proper installation and maintenance, including ensuring good airflow within the computer case and periodically cleaning dust from the heatsink and fan, are essential for optimal cooling performance.
