Prosessimalli is a Finnish term for a process model, a representation of how work is performed within an organization. A process model describes the sequence of activities, the data and resources involved, the roles responsible for tasks, and the rules or conditions that govern transitions between steps. Process models are used in business process management, software development, operations, and quality improvement to analyze, communicate, and optimize work processes.

Content and notation: A process model typically includes activities or tasks, control flow (the order of execution), decision points or gateways, inputs and outputs, actors or roles, data artifacts, and performance constraints. It may use various notations, such as BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation), UML activity diagrams, flowcharts, or data flow diagrams. Models can be abstract or detailed, and may emphasize workflow, data, or resources.

Lifecycle and uses: The development of a process model usually follows elicitation, modeling, validation, analysis, and sometimes simulation, implementation, and monitoring. Stakeholders from business, IT, and operations collaborate to ensure accuracy and buy-in. Common application areas include order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, customer onboarding, and service delivery. Process models support process redesign, automation, compliance reporting, and performance measurement.

Benefits and challenges: Well-crafted process models improve clarity, standardization, and alignment across functions, facilitate automation, and support continuous improvement. They also require governance, disciplined maintenance, and adequate tooling. Models can become stale if processes change faster than the model, and overcomplex models may hinder understanding.
