Prosessiluita

Prosessiluita is a Finnish term that translates to "process mining" in English. It is a discipline that lies at the intersection of data mining and process management. Process mining uses event logs, which are digital records of business activities, to discover, monitor, and improve real business processes. Unlike traditional process modeling which relies on assumptions or manual input, process mining discovers the actual process as it is executed, providing an objective and data-driven view.

The core of process mining involves analyzing event logs to reconstruct the flow of activities. These logs typically contain information such as a case ID (identifying a specific instance of a process), an activity name (the step performed), and a timestamp (when the activity occurred). By correlating these data points, process mining algorithms can create a visual model of the process, highlighting bottlenecks, deviations, and inefficiencies.

There are three main types of process mining. Discovery aims to create a process model from scratch based solely on event logs. Conformance checking compares an existing process model with the actual execution data to identify deviations and understand how well the executed process aligns with the intended one. Enhancement focuses on improving an existing process model by using event log data to identify areas for optimization, such as reducing cycle times or minimizing rework.

The applications of process mining are diverse, spanning across various industries like finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and IT services. It can be used to understand customer journeys, optimize supply chains, ensure regulatory compliance, and identify opportunities for automation.
