Proportsioonile

Proportsioonile is an Estonian linguistic term describing the allative case form of the noun proportsioon (proportion). In Estonian grammar, the allative suffix -le attaches to a noun to indicate direction toward or reference to a point or concept. Thus proportsioonile translates roughly as “to the proportion” or “toward the proportion” and is used when the discourse centers on a specific proportion or when directing actions toward that proportion.

Morphology and syntax: the base is the singular noun proportsioon; it takes the -ile suffix to form proportsioonile. It is not a separate lexical word but an inflected form. It can occur in constructions with verbs that govern the allative case.

Usage: in technical or mathematical writing, proportsioonile may be used to designate the target proportion in discussions of statistics, sampling, or design. It often appears with verbs that require the allative, such as keskenduma (to focus) or viitama (to refer to), for example in phrases translating to “refer to the proportion” or “focus on the proportion.” In everyday Estonian, other constructions are typically used.
