It is a type of PID controller, specifically the combination of a proportional (P) and an integral (I) component. The proportional component reacts to the current error between the desired setpoint and the actual measured value. The larger the error, the stronger the proportional response. The integral component addresses the limitations of the proportional term by accumulating past errors over time. If there is a persistent error, the integral term will gradually increase its output, pushing the system towards the setpoint. This is crucial for eliminating steady-state errors, where the system stabilizes at a value slightly different from the desired setpoint. However, an overly aggressive integral component can lead to instability and sluggish system response.

The combination of proportional and integral control aims to achieve a balance.
