Propertiestranslucency refers to the optical property of a material that permits light to pass through while causing diffusion of the transmitted light. It sits between transparency and opacity: transparent materials transmit light with minimal scattering so images remain clear; opaque materials do not transmit light; translucent materials transmit light with substantial scattering, yielding softened, blurred images and visible internal structure.

The physical basis lies in scattering and absorption within the medium. Microstructure such as particles, fibers, pores, or grains creates scattering centers, while dyes or pigments absorb certain wavelengths. The overall appearance depends on the scattering coefficient, absorption coefficient, and the phase function, as well as the material’s refractive-index mismatches and thickness. Materials with high scattering but moderate absorption appear milky or cloudy; those with strong absorption may appear colored even when semi-translucent.

Measurement and modeling: Translucency is quantified by transmittance and diffuse reflectance, typically measured with integrating spheres. Models include the radiative transfer equation and Monte Carlo simulations; in computer graphics, material parameters such as scattering albedo and phase function are used in rendering to reproduce translucency. Practical metrics include translucency parameter, and composite indices that combine color change under illumination with lightness preservation.

Applications: Translucency plays a key role in ceramics, polymers, paper, paints, cosmetics, architectural glazing, and medical tissues.
