Propertiesexcitation is a term used to describe the activation or modification of a system’s properties by external energy, resulting in excited states whose characteristics differ from those of the ground state. The concept spans electronic, vibrational, magnetic, and optical properties and can be triggered by photons, electrons, phonons, or magnetic fields. In electronic excitation, for example, electrons are promoted to higher energy levels, altering absorption, conductivity, and emission behavior; vibrational excitation involves higher energy vibrational modes that influence infrared and Raman signatures; spin excitation can modify magnetic properties and relaxation pathways.

The theoretical framework for propertiesexcitation draws on perturbation theory and response functions to describe transitions, relaxation, and dephasing between states. Both linear and nonlinear spectroscopic responses are used to probe excited-state properties and their dependence on the excitation conditions, enabling the extraction of transition energies, lifetimes, and coupling mechanisms. Time-resolved approaches, such as pump-probe experiments, help characterize how properties evolve after excitation.

Measurement and characterization typically employ a range of spectroscopic techniques. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy reveals electronic excitations, while infrared and Raman spectroscopy probe vibrational excitations. Fluorescence, phosphorescence, and time-resolved methods reveal excited-state lifetimes. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) or magnetic resonance techniques can access spin excitations. Computational methods, including time-dependent density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, complement experiments by predicting excited-state properties and their response to external stimuli.
