Prognoosiväärtusele, often translated as predictive value, is a concept used in statistical and medical contexts to evaluate the performance of a diagnostic test or screening tool. It refers to the probability that a person with a positive test result actually has the condition being tested for (positive predictive value) or that a person with a negative test result does not have the condition (negative predictive value).

Positive predictive value (PPV) is the probability that a subject has a disease given that the subject has a positive test result. It is calculated as the number of true positives divided by the sum of true positives and false positives. A high PPV means that a positive test result is very likely to indicate the presence of the condition.

Negative predictive value (NPV) is the probability that a subject does not have a disease given that the subject has a negative test result. It is calculated as the number of true negatives divided by the sum of true negatives and false negatives. A high NPV means that a negative test result is very likely to indicate the absence of the condition.

Both PPV and NPV are influenced by the prevalence of the condition in the population being tested. If a condition is rare, even a highly accurate test may have a low PPV, meaning that many positive results could be false positives. Conversely, if a condition is common, an accurate test will generally have a high PPV. Understanding predictive values is crucial for interpreting test results accurately and making informed decisions about further diagnostic steps or treatment.
