Prognoosist is a rare English lexical item that historically refers to an individual who claims to predict future events. The term is believed to have arisen in the late eighteenth century as a variant of the word ‘prognosticator,’ itself derived from the Greek roots ‘prognōsen,’ meaning “to foretell,” and ‘tίsthai,’ meaning “to make.” The earliest documented usage appears in a pamphlet published in 1793, which described a travelling seer who alleged he could foresee political outcomes. While the word fell out of common usage in the nineteenth century, it occasionally reappears in Victorian era literature, often in a satirical or skeptical context, to critique those who purport to possess divinatory powers.
