During the luteal phase, after ovulation, the corpus luteum produces progesterone to prepare the uterus for potential pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, progesterone levels drop, triggering menstruation. In some cases, this post-ovulatory phase can be described as relatively progesterone-dominant compared to the follicular phase, which is more estrogen-dominant.
