Profilehas is a term used in discussions of user profiling and privacy to describe a method for creating a compact, non-reversible representation of a user's profile by applying a cryptographic hash to a selected set of attributes. The resulting value, sometimes called a profile hash, can be used as an identifier across systems without transmitting raw personal data. The term is not standardized and does not refer to a single, universally accepted technique; it appears in academic papers, privacy-focused guidelines, and industry discussions as a concept for privacy-preserving identity representation rather than a single protocol.

Methodology varies by implementation. Practitioners typically select a stable subset of attributes (such as normalized demographic categories, interests, or other profile features), and apply a salted hash function to produce a profilehas value. Salt use and attribute choice influence cross-service linking: a common salt can enable matching across services, while per-service salts can limit linking to preserve privacy. The goal is to reduce exposure of raw attributes while enabling approximate matching, deduplication, or cross-service analytics within consented contexts.

Applications and limitations include privacy-preserving analytics, de-duplication across platforms, and identity resolution in controlled environments. However, profilehas approaches carry re-identification risks if too few attributes are used, if the salt is compromised, or if additional data are correlated with the hash.
