Proceslinje

Proceslinje, a term used in Danish and Norwegian manufacturing contexts, refers to a sequence of processing steps arranged to transform raw materials or components into finished products. A proceslinje can be a dedicated production line in a factory or a modular set of linked stations connected by conveyors or automated transfer systems. It is designed to optimize flow, minimize handling, and synchronize operations to meet a targeted output rate.

Typical elements include workstations, specialized machines, conveyors, buffers, and quality inspection points, all controlled by automation and control systems such as PLCs and SCADA. Items move from station to station at a defined takt time, and line balancing distributes tasks to equalize workload and minimize waits and idle time. Maintenance, changeovers, and downtime are managed to protect throughput and quality.

Layout options range from straight-line configurations to U-shaped lines that enable flexible staffing, and cellular layouts that group related processes. The choice depends on product design, volume, and the desired level of automation and human interaction.

Performance is assessed using metrics such as throughput, cycle time, takt time, and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Lean manufacturing practices—kanban, just-in-time production, and SMED for reducing changeover time—are commonly applied to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
