Privacyrollen

Privacyrollen, or privacy roles, is a concept in privacy governance that defines who is responsible for protecting personal data within an organization. It assigns accountability for data protection activities and helps ensure compliance with data protection laws and internal policies.

Typical roles include data controller (who determines purposes and means of processing), data processor (who processes data on behalf of the controller), data protection officer or privacy officer (providing expert guidance and oversight, with independence where required by law), data owner (responsible for a data domain), data steward (manages data quality and lineage), and system owner or IT administrator (controls the technical environment and access).

These roles support governance processes such as privacy impact assessments, handling data subject rights, retention and deletion schedules, data transfers, incident response, and privacy training. Roles are usually documented in policies or RACI matrices and implemented through organizational structures, contracts, and technical controls.

Effective implementation requires alignment with legal requirements, clear reporting lines, and ongoing review to adapt to changes in processing activities. Common challenges include role overlap, ambiguous responsibilities, and gaps in coverage. When well defined, privacyrollen improve accountability and reduce privacy risk in projects and operations.
