Prezygoticate

Prezygoticate is a rarely used verb in biology that would mean to cause or induce prezygotic barriers to reproduction, thereby preventing fertilization before a zygote forms. The form is built from the Latin prefix pre- “before” + zygot(e) “zygote” + -icate, following conventions for turning nouns and adjectives into verbs. Despite its grammatical plausibility, the term is not widely used in standard texts. Most discussions favor the noun/adjective prezygotic and the noun phrase prezygotic isolation to describe barriers that act before zygote formation.

In practice, processes that limit interbreeding before fertilization are grouped under prezygotic isolation or reproductive isolation. If used, prezygoticate would describe actions or factors that produce such barriers, for example temporal isolation (different breeding times), ecological or behavioral isolation, mechanical incompatibilities, or gamete incompatibility that prevent successful fertilization. However these are described as prezygotic barriers rather than as something that prezygoticates.
