Pressesning is the general process of applying mechanical pressure to a material to extract liquids, remove moisture, form a product, or bond components. The term covers a range of technologies from manual screw presses to hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and it is used in many industries, including food production, agriculture, wood and metalworking, and textiles.

Historically, pressing has ancient origins; olive oil presses and wine presses were among early uses of pressure technology. Over time, mechanisms evolved into screw presses, hydraulic presses, and continuous belt or ram presses. A key distinction is cold pressing, which operates at ambient temperature to preserve flavor and aromas, and hot pressing, which uses elevated temperature to improve extraction and speed.

In food processing, presses are used to extract oil from seeds and kernels, press juice from fruits and vegetables, and dewater or strengthen structures in cheese and tofu production. In manufacturing, pressing forms sheet metal, shapes plastics, or bonds laminates in woodworking and composite materials. In wine and fruit processing, pressing helps separate solids from liquids and clarifies products. Modern presses emphasize control, sanitation, and automation.
