Prepositioned is an adjective describing resources, equipment, or personnel that have been placed in advance in anticipation of future use or demand. The term is commonly used in military logistics, disaster response, and supply chain planning to support rapid deployment and immediate readiness.

Etymology and usage: The word is formed from the prefix pre- meaning before, plus position. It is not related to the grammatical prepositions, though both share the idea of placement. In practical use, prepositioned items are intentionally located ahead of time to shorten lead times and improve responsiveness in a crisis or operation.

Contexts: Military settings frequently use prepositioned stocks and forces stationed in strategic locations abroad to shorten reinforcement timelines and enable swift action. In humanitarian and disaster-relief work, relief items and equipment are prepositioned near high-risk regions to speed up distribution after an event. In industry and supply chains, critical components, spare parts, or manufacturing equipment may be prepositioned at distribution hubs to mitigate delays during spikes in demand or transportation disruptions.
