Prephysical refers to a theoretical concept in speculative physics and metaphysics that describes states or entities existing before the emergence of physical reality as currently understood. The term is often explored in contexts such as quantum mechanics, cosmology, and philosophical inquiries into the nature of existence. Unlike physical phenomena, which are governed by the laws of space, time, and matter, prephysical entities or states are hypothesized to exist beyond these constraints, potentially influencing the formation of the universe.

In some interpretations of quantum theory, prephysical processes may underlie the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics, where particles lack definite properties until measured. This idea is sometimes linked to the concept of a "prequantum" or "prephysical field" that precedes the classical world.
