Prenumeracy

Prenumeracy refers to the foundational skills and knowledge that children develop before they acquire formal reading and writing abilities. It encompasses a range of pre-reading and pre-writing competencies that are crucial for later literacy development. These skills include phonological awareness, which is the ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds within words, such as rhyming and identifying initial sounds.

Another key component of prenumeracy is print awareness, understanding that print carries meaning and recognizing how books are read from left to right and top to bottom. Vocabulary development plays a vital role, as a rich understanding of words supports comprehension.
