Premedikaationa

Premedikaationa is a term used in some languages to denote the administration of premedication—drugs given before a medical procedure or anesthesia to prepare the patient physiologically and psychologically. The practice aims to reduce anxiety, prevent pain, decrease secretions, blunt reflexes, and reduce the risk of aspiration or postoperative complications.

Common classes of agents employed as premedication include benzodiazepines for anxiolysis, opioids for analgesia, anticholinergics to reduce secretions and vagal reflexes, H2-receptor antagonists or proton-pump inhibitors and antacids to reduce gastric acidity and volume, and antiemetics to prevent nausea and vomiting. Choice of agent, timing and route (oral, intravenous, intramuscular, or topical) are tailored to the patient’s medical history, type of procedure, and anesthetic plan.

Risks and side effects depend on the drugs used and patient factors; respiratory depression, excessive sedation, delirium in elderly patients, drug interactions, and allergic reactions are potential concerns. Careful assessment, dose adjustment for age and comorbidity, and monitoring during and after administration help mitigate these risks.

The role of premedication has evolved with advances in anesthesia and perioperative care. Routine use is now individualized rather than universal, guided by patient anxiety, comorbidities, and the specific requirements of surgery or diagnostic procedures.
