Works described as prehistoric-sounding aim to suggest primitive atmospheres or early human sound-worlds through timbre, texture, and arrangement rather than to document historical music.

Techniques commonly associated with the approach include field recordings of natural environments and caves, synthetic recreations of bone flutes or primitive percussion using stones or wood, heavy reverberation to simulate cavern acoustics, low-fidelity textures, irregular or non-metrical rhythms, and the use of vocables or non-verbal vocalizations to imply non-lexical communication.

In practice, the style appears in experimental electronic music, ambient works, and sound design for film and video games where a prehistoric mood is desired. It is usually treated as mood-evoking rather than as ethnomusicological reconstruction, and practitioners may combine historical cues with contemporary production techniques.

Scholars and critics emphasize caution to avoid essentializing prehistory or appropriating Indigenous cultures. Ethical considerations include questions about the provenance of field recordings, consent from communities, and the distinction between artistic depictions of the ancient past and factual claims about ancient music.
