Prachodayat is a traditional Indian festival celebrated primarily in the state of Kerala, particularly among the Nair community. The term "Prachodayat" is derived from the Malayalam words "pracha" (meaning "to begin") and "odayat" (meaning "to rise"), collectively signifying the dawn of a new era or the beginning of a significant event. The festival is closely associated with the annual renewal of the *Tharavadu* (joint family) system, a traditional social structure in Kerala.

Prachodayat is typically observed on the first day of the Malayalam month of Kumbham (which usually falls in February or March). It marks the beginning of the *Kumbham* month and is often linked to the *Tharavadu* system’s annual rituals, including the renewal of family bonds and the distribution of food and gifts among relatives. The festival is also seen as a time for the *Tharavadu* to reflect on its history, lineage, and responsibilities.

The celebrations often include family gatherings, feasts, and cultural performances such as traditional dances and music. Elders of the family may recite genealogies or share stories of the *Tharavadu’s* past, reinforcing its cultural and social significance. In some cases, the festival may coincide with other regional observances, such as the *Vishu* festival, though its focus remains distinctively tied to the *Tharavadu* tradition.

While Prachodayat retains cultural importance, its observance has diminished in modern times due to changing social structures and urbanization.
